How to Submit an Entry for the Grantham Prize

Entry Deadlines

All book entries must be postmarked by January 9, 2012.
All other entires must be postmarked by January 30, 2012.

Eligibility Period

January 1 through December 31 of the previous calendar year (2011).

Submission Instructions

An entry may be submitted either by the journalist(s) responsible for the original work or by another individual nominating that work, such as an editor or contest coordinator. An entry may be nominated by an unaffiliated person or organization with knowledge, approval and permission of the author(s) and any and all other contributors.

  1. For all entries, as detailed below, no fewer than seven copies must be submitted for consideration.
  2. A complete entry form must be filled out online, printed and included with the entry package
  3. Entry packages must include a permission form signed by each entrant, granting the use of quotes, photographs, video, etc., from the submission if selected as a winner.
  4. Entry packages must include short biographical information for each entrant.
  5. Each entry must be accompanied by a concise summary (approximately 250 words) describing the entry submitted for Prize consideration.
  6. If a subscription or registration is required to access the story or series, a username and password for jurors must be provided.
  7. Entrants are strongly encouraged to submit follow-up editorial(s), letters to the editor and other substantive reactions to the entered submission, and formal praise for and/or challenges to the substantive content of the submission. Formal challenges to stories - and how any such challenges were addressed - must be submitted as supplemental information.
  8. Each entry must be accompanied by a US$40 fee, payable to Metcalf Institute.
  9. Entry packages must be mailed to the Grantham Prize Administrator, Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting, URI Graduate School of Oceanography, 218 South Ferry Road, Narragansett, R.I. 02882. Sender should request that the postmark be printed and affixed to the package.
  10. Please refer to the Entry Checklist before sending a prize submission.

Metcalf Institute will acknowledge receipt of all entries by email.
