1. For freelance journalists/reporters, whose signature should be secured as the "Attestor" on the entry form?

Obtain the signature of an editor or other relevant manager employed by the medium in which your article was published.

2. Can an online-only media outlet apply for The Grantham Prize?

Submissions from online media outlets are eligible for the prize. The online media outlet must be publicly accessible and the piece must have been made available to general audiences. If a subscription or registration is required to access the story or series, provide a username and password that all jurors can use. See Eligibility Requirements for more information.

3. Can organizations that produce a show or series that is publicly broadcast or aired on, for instance, PBS or a cable station, be considered for this award?

Yes, as long as the station broadcast or aired to a general audience. An entry submitted as a series must have been identified as such in the initial installment.

4. Is a series of articles that is re-assembled from its original form into a reprint (i.e., multiple articles published on multiple days) acceptable to submit as an entry, as long as there are seven copies?

A series that is re-assembled from its original form into a reprint is acceptable as long as all articles, photographs, and components of the series are reprinted in full. See Acceptable Formats for more information.

5. My organization requires that a W-9 with a tax i.d. be submitted before a check for the entry fee can be issued. How do I handle this?

A W-9 can be made available by e-mail, surface mail, or facsimile by sending us an e-mail indicating your intent to submit an entry. Include your name, organization, phone number, and preferred method of delivery. Send your request to

6. Can an entry be submitted if it is under consideration for another award?

Yes.

7. Can the same person serve as both attestor and nominator?

Yes, if that person (e.g., an editor) supervised the reporting.

8. Is every entry required to have a nominator?

No. This is only necessary if the entry was prepared or submitted by someone other than the nominee.

9. Can I nominate an entry that I did not produce?

Yes, although you must get the signature(s) of the nominated entrant(s) on the required Permission form.

10. Must all entries have been produced and distributed in English?

Yes, The Grantham Prize is only open to works produced and distributed in English, and entries must be in English.

11.  I am not a U.S. citizen. Can I enter The Grantham Prize?

American citizenship is not an eligibility requirement for The Grantham Prize. Eligibility depends upon the location of the publication or broadcast. Entries must have been aired or published within the U.S. or Canada during the previous calendar year for consideration by the jurors.

12. Can a publisher enter more than 3 books for the prize, if the additional books were published as paperbacks in 2010?

No. A single publishing house can enter no more than three books for consideration in a single year.

13. If I am submitting a series, am I limited to entering a maximum of ten stories as part of that series?

No. There is no limit to the number of articles/episodes that can be submitted if they were clearly identified as being part of a series on the original print/broadcast dates. The ten story limit applies to beat reporting entries and articles/broadcasts that were not originally identified as being part of a series.

14. I am submitting a body of work focused on a single topic composed of more than ten pieces, but this was not labeled as a series. How many stories may I submit as part of the entry?

This type of entry is limited to ten articles/episodes. It is suggested that the entrant select the ten pieces that best exemplify the quality, breadth, and impact of the reporting. The other articles/episodes may be included or listed as "supplementary information." It is recommended that the entrant describe the full scope of the reporting in the entry summary.
